Supporting the drafting of UNCRC Committee’s General Comment 26 on children’s rights and the environment with a focus on climate change

CLIENTS: terre des hommes Germany, CERI – the Children’s Environmental Rights Initiative

TEAM: Francesca Viola, Chiara Massaroni, Alessandra Alloni

We supported as official partners and technical analytical experts various organizations working closely with the United Nation Committee on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on the drafting of General Comment 26 on Children’s Rights and the Environment with a Special Focus on Climate Change. We analysed the written comments and observations gathered from Member States, Civil Society Organizations and children and young people across the world via workshops, online surveys and questionnaires to produce reports which supported the conceptualisation and writing of General comment 26. We also liaised with multiple stakeholders to collaboratively draft a toolkit to give children arenas to express their voices on the document produced by the UNCRC Committee.

The outcomes of the work included confidential documentation as well as published reports: (i) a report presenting the key findings from the first phase of online consultations with children and young people; (ii) a report presenting the second phase of online consultations with children and young people; (iii) a Global Charter taking up the key aspects of environmental rights consultations; and (iv) the Child Friendly version of General Comment 26.
