MiniBIG – Second edition

CLIENT: A.L.I.C.E. Soc. Coop. Sociale – ONLUS

TEAM: Maria Rosaria Centrone, Alessandra Alloni, Francesca Viola, Domenico Centrone

After the success of the first edition of MiniBIG, the section of the Bari International Gender festival dedicated to children and young people, our team curated its second edition. We welcomed 260 students to a morning made of arthouse short movies, group activities and a plenary debate on issues related to the body, physicality, and senses.

We asked ourselves: How aware are we of our body, how connected are we with it, how much are we able to respect and enforce our desires and boundaries? What does our body tell about us? What are the dreams, the positive changes, that a greater connection with one’s own senses and those of others can trigger?

We selected 3 short films as a starting point for our debate with young people between 13 and 15 years old:

  • JUNIOR, directed by Julia Ducournau (France, 2011. 21′)
  • PARAMORE, directed by Andrea Lamedica, Francesco Mastroleo (Italy, 2023. 20′)
  • YANDERE, directed by William Laboury (France, 2019. 20′) – premiere in Italy

An exceptional environment, the cinema, became both a workshop site and a round table. We fostered an environment to talk with young people, but above all to listen to their opinions, on issues concerning the body, consent, physicality as source of discrimination and a driving force for inner and collective change. We framed the whole programme in an intersectional, intergenerational and anti-adultist perspective.

Our core team took care of the conception and implementation of the activities, counting on the support of Domenico Centrone (filmmaker) for the film curatorship and Spine Bookstore which recommended queer readings on the sidelines of the event.
