The Bari International Gender festival just turned 10 years old! And we could not miss it with our MiniBIG, the section of the festival dedicated to children and adolescents. On the 26th of November 2024 we welcomed 280 students between 14 and 16 years old to our usual morning made of arthouse short movies, group activities and a plenary debate.

In the intersectional perspective that characterizes the festival, the adolescences at the heart of this edition were those who encounter (and clash with) the problems of society, created by previous generations, that the youngest must face, as active members of the communities in which they live.

What does it mean to be a teenager in a military occupation zone? What does it mean to be a child who looks at her future marked by climate change? What does it mean to participate politically without having the right to vote? What does it mean to be people under-18 who resist war?

What does it mean to be teenagers fighting to create a better world?

We tried to answer these questions by talking with our guests from the Palestinian Community of Puglia and Basilicata and with the activists of Fridays for Future Bari – and above all by using the medium of cinema, screening three beautiful short films:

Palestine Islands by Nour Ben Salem and Julien Menanteau (FRA/JOR, 2023, 22”)

Away by Ruslan Fedotov (BEL/HUN, 2022, 20”)

Pacifico Oscuro by Camila Beltrán (COL, 2020, 11’)
